Now it is time to prime the figure, for that I use the Flat Black from Life Colour, applied using the airbrush. The reason of using black as primer is because some causes. The first one is because since my starting I accustomed to use that colour, and I don’t find any difference, in that size, to use any other colour. The second cause is for a practical and comfortable reason, and the fact is that you can be supported by the primer for the deeper zones. For superiors sizes, truly, other colours works properly, especially the grey. What you have to do (ever) is to look after the basecoats; they have to be so opaque and homogeneous.

Preparación y Base / Preparation and Basing

Limado:

Siempre me gusta esculpir pequeños detalles.

Preparation and Basing

Filing:

We begin with the miniature. The first thing we have to do is to delete the mould lines and burrs. The Colossus Fighter figure is presented in two parts, the whole body by one side and the hands and hammer in the other, the cuts of the parts are easy and the laces are so good, but, we have to look after the hammer’s handle because if it is a bit bent, or, we accidentally bent it, the hands will not attach in their correct position. The metal quality is good, without pores or something strange. The mould lines are so soft and are easy to remove using an x-acto blade, the mould lines don’t pass trough difficult parts, except one with which you have to take a lot of care, which passes through the right eyebrow, nothing extra.

Pinning:

Because the hammers piece is a bit heavy and it could be broken the best thing we can do is pin it using a pair of clip rods. There is an attach in a hand, what i do is to delete the “male” part and were you can see a mark I drill a hole whit the hand driller. Using the “female” part as a mark I do the other part of the drill. With a little metal rod I test it even it takes the correct size.

Now is when we attach without glue and we see were the other hand touches the arm. More or less I drill two holes, one in the hand and the other in the arm. If you check and look after in the process there won’t be any problem and the pieces will attach perfectly. That, almost ever is easy to get, but sometimes there is no luck and you only could use one pin. In that chance the pieces attach as they have to do.

I don’t glue the hammer part, because, it will make me difficulties in the painting process. After, when we have finished the base we will do another pin to attach the foot and the ground.

Basing

The first I do is chose a plinth, in that occasion I take one which measures 4cm x 4cm with a real representing area which measures 3cm x 3cm. It could seem a bit large, but thinking in what I want to represent I need an amount of space. (The hole in the centre is nothing, I have that base for a bust at the end I didn’t do it, and the hole is the attach)

I thought about haw I have to do to give the flying sensation to the base. My first idea was to do first the lower part of it. Then, I take  portion of Super Sculpey Firm, my tools, a little sponge which is a bit wet with baby corporal oil and I tried to do and irregular shape on a wooden plinth which I use to try things. When I get what I want I painted it with a little amount of corporal oil and I let absorb it. Alter that with the gum shapers and some synthetic brushes I smooth and blend the shape done with SSF looking after don’t destroy the shape and irregularities.

When that is done y put the prebase made with SSF into the oven. For that I have a little electric oven, what I do is put the temperature for about 110º Celsius and put inside the object without preheating the oven the temperature increases progressively, for the size of the object I let it inside for 15 minutes. When that amount of time passes I let it inside 5 minutes more but with the oven in the OFF position, then it begins to cool gradually, alter that y open the oven door and let the object a bit more inside, doing that we avoid eventual brakes or scratches caused by the differences between temperatures. Once we take off the base from the oven and it is totally cold with a blade i remove from the wood plinth with a lot of care, cutting the edges. It takes off without problems.

Now I take a bit of raw or root, I found them in the street and I take for when they will be necessary, I break little bits to give the adequate size and shape I want and with the x-acto knife I make a cut to flatten it to do the base.

In the part we have flatten the future tree I drill a hole to put inside a good metal pin, it will cross the prebase and it will finish into a hole we have made in the plinth, bend the wire in a tortuous way that’s because it will seem a root also the sustenance of the scene.

From that point, with superglue and cyanocrylate accelerator I began to glue some bits of roots and/or branches forming a tangle, the only ting we have to look alter is that all the main roots go from the tree, but some could go from a little bit far from it, thats becaus some could go incide the pice of Herat that represents the prebase. When we attach some, with their ramifications and so, we get something like that:

From here i begin to work with Feroca’s putty on the upper part of the prebase, the first thing I do is to put lots of little putty balls and then I blend them but creating texture and undulations and making bigger the base superficies. To end that step I sculpt some superficial roots, to make them as real as I could I look the ones which are down the “earth”.

Now some parts of the edge of the base have little gaps where there is no putty, I reconstruct them putting little applications of putty to smooth the edge but looking after not to do a so regular shape.

I was happened to add some skulls between the roots, one in the “floor” and one on them. I think in that way of visualisation as a x-ray of the earth which only “removes” the earth.

When we arrive to that part of the work we have to start with the upper part of the base, for that, I put a thin layer of putty in the whole surface, I take and attach a skull next to the tree then i put some putty around, that makes it semi buried. To give texture to the terrain I use an old tooth brush, if you punch with it only once only small holes appears, but if you punch some times and from different directions the terrain gets and interesting texture which works very good to this sizes.

Before the putty dries, with the mini I press where I want to dispose it, with that I get a more perfect attach.

I drill a little hole in the base with a lot of care because it is very delicate, after that I glue the mini to the terrain.

And now to finish it with a bit more of detail, we put little portions of putty in the holes around the foot/rock zone for a more perfect attach, with the putty which surplus I sculpt little stones to accompany the big one which is stepped by our character. I sculpt a litle horn to the skull in the floor, with that i give the sensation that it is a scene in a demonic world.

For last and to give a little more live, I sculpt a lizard in the tree. I always enjoy sculpting small details. For them i use always greenstuff (Duro) because its qualities make that this putty the best for that purpose.

And with that, the mini is ready for priming.
